Gothic Quarter The labyrinth-like narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter hold some of the most important points of interest of the city, such as Barcelona’s Cathedral, Plaça de Sant Jaume or the beautiful Carrer del Bisbe. This is a neighbourhood that is a must-see for anyone visiting the city.
Part of the Jewish Quarter (El Call) “Call” was the name of this neighbourhood where one of the most prosperous Jewish communities in the Mediterranean lived until it was expelled in 1492. Several small streets with names that allude to their past remain and can be found just behind the Palau de la Generalitat.
Plaça del Rei Plaça del Rei is an incalculably rich site, historically and architecturally speaking. This plaça is now the oldest heart of the city of Barcelona. Three of the city’s most important historic monuments can be found in this very small area: Palau Reial Major, Palau del Lloctinent and the Royal Chapel of Santa Àgata.
La Ribera neighbourhood / Passeig del Born This old neighbourhood, known today as El Born, is one of the most attractive areas of the old city, with its charming, narrow labyrinth-like mediaeval streets. It was the economic centre of the city between the 13th and 15th centuries and as a result many palaces were built, which still stand today and are now used for cultural activities.
Church of Santa Maria del Mar This is considered the people’s cathedral as it was built thanks to the hard work and money of the locals from the area. It is a spectacular temple, with a harmony and elegance that deserve admiration.
Carrer de Montcada This unique street that was the residential centre of Barcelona’s nobility between the 13th and 16th centuries is lined with palaces and stately homes. It is also where you will find the Picasso Museum and some of the most prestigious art galleries in the city.
Visit to Picasso Museum The museum was founded by express wish of Pablo Picasso and is proof of the strong connection that this genius had with the city of Barcelona. It occupies five adjacent Catalan Gothic-style palaces that were built between the 13th and 14th centuries. The museum houses a collection of over 3,800 works by Picasso from different periods but mainly from his formative and early years as an artist.
